In 1998, the Ministry of Finance, together with the Prime Minister’s Office, launched a project aimed at producing multilingual glossaries that would contain terms needed in the core sectors of the Ministry’s work. The following glossaries have since been compiled as part of this project: EMU Glossary (1999), Budget Glossary (2001), Taxation Glossary (2002), Labour Market Glossary (2005) and Glossary of Municipal Administration (2013).
The Glossary of Municipal Administration contains 220 key concepts with definitions. The glossary is in Finnish, Swedish and English. It is primarily intended for the needs of those employed in the government sector, although it should also be useful to anyone dealing with municipal issues or otherwise requiring local government terminology. The purpose of the glossary is to standardise the use of terms and to avoid possible confusion in translations concerning local government matters.
Some English terms in the glossary were edited in 2021.
Some Finnish and English terms in the glossary were edited in 2025.
